Description
Leaves: Alternate; simple; doubly serrate; 2" to 6" long; deciduous; pubescent beneath; 2 prominent glands on petiole near blade.
Twigs/buds: Twigs medium texture, reddish brown, with prominent lenticels. Buds scaly, red-brown like twig.
Flowers/fruit: Flowers white, fragrant, 1", in small clusters present in April. Fruit a large, dark red drupe; juicy; typical sweet cherry.
Bark: Shiny and layered with prominent horizontal ridges or lenticels.
Wood: Used in Europe for interior finish, musical instruments, and furniture; trunk often crooked; little information available.
General: Small tree native to Europe and Asia, but commonly grown around the world for its fruit. Shade intolerant. Fruit and/or plant part can be nuisances; use fruitless varieties if possible.
Landscape Use: Typical sweet cherry orchard tree. Again, better ornamental species are available for the landscape if fruit is not important. Zones 3-8.
