Description

Leaves: Needles in bundles of 2; 2" to 4" long; remain on tree 5-6 years.

Twigs/buds: Twigs whitish, with rough texture resembling a snake’s skin; thick.  Buds brown; tips often whitish; egg-shaped to oblong, not resinous.

Flowers/fruit: Monoecious.  Fruit a woody cone; 4" to 5" long; yellow-brown; purple when young.

Bark: Ash gray when older.

Wood: Information unavailable.

General: A native of the Balkans, Italy; should grow well in Utah.  Similar to Austrian pine, but more compact.  Salt tolerant.  Shade intolerant.

Landscape Use: Not common in Utah, but should be planted more; tough.  Several cultivars available, including a dwarf.  Zones 5-7.

Cultivars: 'Green Bun', Satillit'.
